Hauraki Rail Trail

On our second last day in New Zealand, we decided to do something different and hired some bikes to explore the surroundings in a different way.

We drove part of the Hauraki Rail trail, from Waihi up until Hikutaia – which is about 35 kms one way. It’s a very easy road, without any obstacles, so very family friendly.

Goldfields Railway

At the start we passed the Goldfield Railway Station and some older train parts installed along the way. My husband really wanted to stop and take a look around, so I followed

Karangahake Gorge

On the way back, we stopped at the Karangahake Gorge, where we left our bikes aside for a small hour. This area is voted one of the 101 must do’s for Kiwis. We ventured into the walkways and old tunnels, home to one of the busiest and most lucrative goldstrikes in the country. Old mine buildings and machinery can be seen from a number of locations on the walkway. Great surroundings for some pictures…
