The natural attractions are countless – there’s a lot to check out on this route, but as we had limited time, we just stuck with the highlights on the R532 and wanted to get the following from our checklist:
– God’s window, looking down upon the Lowveld’s cliffs
– Bourke’s Luck Potholes, a strange but marvellous looking geological site formed by water erosion
– Getting the best views of Blyde River Canyon from the three Rondavels
Lucky random stop along the road
You have to be lucky with the weather, though. We weren’t as much that day, so when we arrived at God’s window’s parking lot, it was pretty clear we wouldn’t see anything because of the low hanging clouds. So we – very unfortunately – had to skip this one and went onto the next: Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
On our way down there, we passed a smaller dirt road going down to the river we had been riding along and which we felt like checking out, as we had time to spare. Ended up to be a great decision, as we got some nice pictures there.
Bourke’s Luck Potholes
Just amazing… there’s no point in describing this place, you just have to see it for yourself. I loved the feeling of getting onto that rock looking down the canyon. Pretty cool, no?
Three Rondavels
Exactly as they sound, the Three Rondavels are three round mountain tops, very similar to the traditional round African homesteads called rondavels.
The view point is spectacular, looking out on the Three Rondavels on the other side of the Drakensberg range of mountains.
