Birthplace of the Olympic Games

Olympia was our first stop on our cruise covering the Greek Island.

It was the site of the ancient Olympic Games. It was not a town, but only a sanctuary with buildings associated with games and the worship of the gods. Olympia was a national shrine of the Greeks and contained many treasures of Greek art, such as temples, monuments, altars, theatres and statues

The archaeological site covers:
– The ancient stadium
– The Temple of Hera
– The Philippaeum
– The Temple of Zeus
– The Phidias workshop
– The Palaestra
– The Leonideum
